Weight loss can be a symptom of certain diseases

Weight loss can be a symptom of certain diseases, including Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can lead to a severe weight loss condition called pulmonary cachexia, which is characterized by a loss of muscle mass.

Around 35% of patients with advanced COPD experience this, and many others have some degree of weight loss. This is associated with a poorer prognosis.

Causes may include a loss of appetite due to reduced activity, increased energy needed for breathing, and difficulty eating due to labored breathing.

Cancer can also cause unexplained weight loss and is responsible for about one-third of unintentional weight loss cases. Gastrointestinal, prostate, liver, ovarian, blood, and lung cancers are among the types that may cause weight loss.

HIV and AIDS can cause weight loss, which is associated with worse outcomes. A condition called wasting syndrome is a defining feature of AIDS.

Gastrointestinal disorders are a common cause of unexplained weight loss.

Celiac disease, peptic ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, gastritis, diarrhea, and chronic mesenteric ischemia are examples of conditions that can cause weight loss.

Infections can also cause weight loss. Fungal infections, endocarditis, parasitic diseases, AIDS, and some other subacute or hidden infections can lead to weight loss.

Renal diseases, such as uremia, can cause weight loss due to poor appetite, vomiting, and nausea. Cardiovascular disease, particularly congestive heart failure, can cause unexplained weight loss.

Connective tissue disease can also cause weight loss. Oral, taste, or dental problems, including infections, can reduce nutrient intake and lead to weight loss.
